Kimono Tango Clutch Bag -

Kimono Tango Crimson & Ebony Clutch Bag
(5,000 JPY/$40/36 EUROS/£27)

This stunning clutch bag from Kimono Tango is made from genuine recycled silk brocade from Nishijin, Kyoto and features three very auspicious symbols - the chrysanthemum, pine tree and tortoise shell.  As with many motifs used in traditional Japanese art, the motifs hail from China.

Kimono Tango Crimson & Ebony Clutch Bag
(5,000 JPY/$40/36 EUROS/£27)

The chrysanthemum was introduced to Japan prior to circa 794 and was popular with the Japanese literati during the Heian period (794 - 1185) and was often mentioned in poetry as well as used as a design element in various items.  The pine tree itself isn't an import from China, but its meaning is.  It symbolizes longevity, good fortune and steadfastness. The meaning of behind the tortoise shell is a little more complex and what it symbolizes in Japan can be traced back to Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism.  However, it too generally is an auspicious symbol for longevity.
