This fabric uses platinum leaf, and was an Obi made to wear to the most formal occasions.  To see the mist covered mountain range, you have to turn the bag to the side. However, it was a designer decision to look at this tableau in a more abstract way and make it look better when made into a tote bag. The iridescent silk brocade in delicate colors doesn't photograph well, so when you actually hold this bag in your hands you will be surprised and delighted at the depth and richness of a complex mix of colors.

This Obi with its striking contrast between vermilion, black, gold and silver is from Nishijin, Kyoto.  Nishijin is famous for producing some of the finest silk brocades. The craftsmanship of these luxurious textiles dates back to the 8th century.

The gold colored handle in faux leather compliments the silk brocade and the designer has cut the textile to maximize the lovely curves of the red stripes bordering the chrysanthemums.  Maybe it's just me but this is one of my favorite bags!

Not all Kimono Obis are ornate and glittering with gold, silver and various bright colors.  This type of Obi is more down key and only uses two colors of silk threads. This one was woven in Hakata in Fukuoka Prefecture (Kyushu) and is characterized by the use of repeating geometric designs.  It is a class of Obi that is made for everyday use rather than on special occasions.  The Obi is more comfortable than some of the more ornate Obi and it commands a high price on the market.

The fabric for our Golden River tote bag is 100% silk brocade.  Gold threads were woven onto a dark navy base with a satin weave finish to create these magnificent swirls that simulate the movement of water.  

Like our other tote bags, this too has buttons that enable you to make it more compact if necessary.

The handles and buttons are in gold to match the color of the fabric.

New Tote Bag in Silk Brocade

This is one of our new tote bags.  It is made from 100% Nishijin silk brocade and has buttons attached on it so that you can use it in two different ways.  It is likely that the Obi was woven between 1980 - 2000 and in excellent condition.  The chrysanthemums on this Obi are auspicious and the Obi was originally made to wear on celebratory occasions such as the Coming of Age Ceremony or to weddings.

When we deliver your products, they will be gift wrapped in a similar manner to this.  We prefer to wrap them in clear plastic so that you know which product is which.  The plastic will also protect the silk from wet damage during transportation.

These are all hand made and a one of a kind creation.

Our soft cases for portables are some of our best selling items.  We make these for laptops, iPads, the iPad Mini and mobile phones.  If you need something customized for a different size, we can make it for you.  All you need to do is give us the exact dimensions of your device.

If you want extra padding or want a zipper to close your case (or whether this isn't necessary) is all up to you as each one is made individually and not mass produced.

Yagyu no Sho (Traditional Japanese Ryokan)

The designer and founder of Kimono Tango, Chizuko Takahashi, had a meeting with the head of Yagyu no Sho recently.  They have been one of our primary supporters and their customers have bought numerous products from us.  Yagyu no Sho is an upmarket ryokan (Japanese style inn) located in Izu.  If you would like to spend a relaxing time at an onsen (hot springs) please stop by!
